Went to my local gun shops, but all 9mm ammo is gone. All I could find is 5 boxes of Winchester 9mm NATO http://wrigleyammo.com/product.aspx?item=Q4318-449 at Dicks. They are limiting puchases to 6 boxes, but all they had were 5.

Guess I'm going to have ration my range time until the panic buying calms down a bit. :groan:

I try to keep at least 500 rds per weapon caliber in emergency reserve, plus I am set up to reload for all of my calibers,

We cannot trust the commercial sector to always have ammo, the future has too many questions in it,.

I know building up a reserve is a pain, but it may pay off if things get as bad as many people think that it will

7,62x39 is never in stores close by here. I have to drive an hour to get it. And I usually can only make myself get about 500 at a time. I'm really tight with my pennies these days. Don't know why though, one day shooting in the backyard is worth about $30 a pop now. Shooting is a rich mans game like everything else. I really need a job. Five more resumes out this morning, still no calls from the last 50. I love being old.

I gave up on going back to work, glad as hell to have my Federal annuity or we'd be living in a tent somewhere.

Hi Waltham41. Agree on the reserve and will try to use that as a goal. I'm sitting on 550 rds now, but plan on increasing as much as I can find/afford. I still want to get to the range next week.

Hi Mogunner. Here in the nanny state of Massachusetts, we are running low. I'll keep "hunting" as long as the wallet holds out..... between the holidays and the new taxes kicking in next week, I'm might have to decide between Toilet Paper or Ammo.....(ok honey, break out the tree leaves... :roflol: )

I buy the TP in bulk and my wife just rolls her eyes. BUT we never run out. :) I guess I'm kinda pushing her limit with ammo purchases, but I guess she has the same patience as your wife.....so far.

I think I'll just purchase ammo the same time I purchase TP and hope she won't notice the extra charges. Maybe that will "ease the pain"...

Just tell your wife that if the end of the world as we know it (TEOTWAWKI) happens, we will not only have to be able to defend ourselves, but we will have to be able to make arrangements to get or even take what we need to survive from others that are perhaps better prepared, but are weaker in offense/defense.

So where do you folks go to get ammo in bulk? Do you use online sites or just make weekly trips to the usual outdoor/hunting big box stores? I've got a JCP, and my local wally-world seems to stock nothing but .40 cal and 12 gauge, so it isn't too hard to find, but I'm trying to stockpile some decent .40 cal without breaking the bank. I haven't had any issues with any particular ammo type; my JCP seems to eat it all although the bulk of my experience is with Federal. What's the most economical option in your opinion(s)? I haven't tried any of that Tula stuff since I've heard bad things about non-brass casings.

I have to admit that I'm still easing into the shooting sports. It's something I want to do, but don't quite have the resources to turn it into an every-weekend hobby.

Finally, for any reloaders out there; what's the break-even point where reloading becomes economical? 100 rds a month? 1000? The engineering geek in me thinks it would be fun and interesting, but I don't know if I shoot enough to justify the cost of all the dies, scales, presses, powder, etc...

I buy from wherever it's on sale. But the 9x18 I use has to be bought online because nobody stocks it around here. And online it's also from the least expensive supplier in both price and shipping as some sell at a serious discount and then rape you on s&h.

A breakeven point on a hobby? :funny: :groan:
Breakeven point= stay at home, in your bedroom, in bed, with the sheets and blankets pulled up to your ears.
In other words it's like every other hobby that is simply a hobby, money goes out, it never comes back. With that said, you might be able to reduce expenditures by reloading your own. You can get simple reloading kits, powder, bullets, and primers and start reloading for less than $125 in most cases. That doesn't include the numerous books on date that you will need; however, it is possible to reload without them, just highly inadvisable. Those with a lot of reloading experience will show up and set me and you straight shortly. I've never reloaded. I've done a ton of research because I am also going to start reloading very, very soon. :yes2:
