I have been jonesing for a good lever action rifle and pretty much decided I'll go with the Rossi or the Henry Big Boy.
I can't decide which one to go with but I really like the side loading feature on the Rossi but I also like the brass receiver on the Henry.
Final conundrum.
357 mag or 44 mag??

Which would y'all choose?

If you don't reload, I'd go .357, but 44 has a lot of bang

I have a rossi stainless in 45lc, a marlin cowboy in 45-70 and a henry big boy in 44 mag. I would go with the 44 mag over the 357 if it were me. but I like big booms :)

I need to start reloading but that's another topic.
Anybody have any good reference info on velocities I could expect out of a 24 inch barrel instead of the standard 4 -8 inch barrel lengths common to handguns of this caliber?

I have a Rossi .357 and another in .44, the .357 is louder than a .22 but not much more recoil. The .44 has more authority but still isn't much.

They're both fun to shoot but the 1895 in .450 Marlin wakes you up and gets your attention.

.357 mag is more available and cheaper both to buy, and load than .44 mag. And once in a longer barrel, .357 is a formidable round. That's my criteria in a nutshell.

Right now .44mag is costing nearly $1 per shot for factory stuff. Empty brass is almost impossible to find and equally expensive.

The .357 will allow you to shoot any .38spl or .357 load, ammo is reasonably priced, brass is cheap, as are slugs and other components and inside 100 yards a hot .357 will take down any North American game.

I have both .357 and .44mags and love both but I must recommend the .357 for this effort if you simply MUST have a lever gun in a pistol caliber.

Having both calibers and others, I always recommend that if one is going to carry a rifle then carry a rifle caliber. I would go with the humble, tried and true .30-30 with a pistol in either of the mentioned calibers as a backup gun.

Wanting to carry only one type of ammo is not an excuse for using an inefficient caliber in your primary weapon. And your rifle is your primary weapon, the pistol is always a defensive backup.

The lever gun will never be my primary rifle, defensive or otherwise but I smell what your stepping in.
I tell myself I want it primarily for good fun iron sight plinking beyond normal "plinking" ranges. I've never been overly fond of optics on a rifle unless it was a dedicated long range hunting rifle.
With this rifle I'll be able to practice the craft of a true rifleman and embarrass the kids with their scoped ARs at the range.
A 357 mag out of a 24" barrel will have some serious zip to it.
There's just something so satisfying about center punching a small target at extended range with iron sights shooting offhand. Especially when the boy and his friends have to walk their little hot rod 22s in on a target using a scope and a bipod.
Don't try telling them that their grandpa would be ashamed. They're young and still know everything. Funny but the old man can still take them to school.

Gotta agree with tincup. I also notice that handgun and rifle loads in 38/357 or 44 have different load data.

I have a SIL that I do have a LOT of fun with - He really study's stuff and knows a lot.

I've called him my "In Town SIL" (I have two - one here and one 250 miles away)
AND I've referred to him as my "Know-It-All" SIL a few times...

But I better knock that shit off... I think he's signed on here and reading my stuff!!
But he's pretty good natured - and actually a hell of a good man. I don't think he'll be too tough on me...

He might have a few stories about me - and turn the tables on me a bit!!

But i'm the same way - If i happen to do pretty good at the range, I like to let him know!!

Everyone knows at least one person who can't be told anything because they already know everything.
My older brother had that issue to an extreme degree.
He couldn't even be coached on his driving techniques.
That is until I outran him in his Camaro in moms old 4 door around our local track. Then he'd try to listen but was just constitutionally incapable of exercising new techniques. His way was the only way he could do anything which had to really stuck for him. Imagine not being able to accept constructive criticism from anybody about anything.
Kinda reminds me of my ex wife.

Ok so I decided to go with the 357.
Now I must decide Henry or Rossi?????
At least the Henry is made in America, fit and finish are better than average and much better than Rossi.
Rossi has the loading gate on the side of the receiver and the Henry is only able to load through the front end of the tube magazine.
Not sure how much of a difference that would make to me in practical terms but I'm pretty positive I'd prefer the loading gate.
Anybody have any experience with these two?
Anybody buy the Rossi and then wish they'd sprung for the Henry or maybe the Marlin?
Why can't I just buy them both? It's not like I won't shoot both of them off I have them.

And, how they feel in your hands! Stock length to rear sight, etc.
